Within the past decade, Midea has issued two major product recalls in North America—one involving dehumidifiers and the other air conditioners—with a combined total of over 5 million units recalled. This staggering figure arguably places Midea at the top of the industry in terms of recall volume, earning it the ironic title of "recall champion." So how can Midea still tell a compelling story about the quality of Chinese manufacturing to Western audiences?

On June 6, 2025, media outlets from Europe and North America reported that Midea Group announced a recall of 1.7 million window air conditioners sold in the United States and Canada due to potential mold growth.

These air conditioners, introduced in 2020, feature a unique U-shaped design that allows windows to be closed while the unit is installed, thereby reducing operating noise.

However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated that this design can sometimes impede the rapid drainage of water, leading to mold growth and posing a risk of respiratory illnesses or other infections for some consumers.

The CPSC reported that it has received at least 152 complaints regarding mold presence in the air conditioners, including 17 reports of consumers experiencing respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and/or sore throats after exposure to mold.

The recall involves Midea-manufactured U-shaped and U+ shaped window air conditioners. A full list of recalled models, including 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU units, is available on the CPSC and Midea websites. These air conditioners were sold between March 2020 and May 2025, with prices ranging from $280 to $500.

Consumers are advised to contact Midea immediately to receive a free repair or a full or pro-rated refund, depending on the purchase or manufacturing date.

In China, most households use split-type air conditioners, while the recalled models in North America are window units (monoblock design). If the drainage outlet of a monoblock unit becomes blocked or defective, it can lead to water accumulation. Over time, this creates an environment conducive to bacterial and mold growth. How can such issues be resolved?

At Lightbes, we specialize in the research and manufacturing of ultraviolet (UV) germicidal lamps. Based on the functions of our products and the real-world challenges faced by air conditioner manufacturers, we recommend that air conditioning companies consider installing UV germicidal lamps near the condensate drain pan and coils.

By applying UV light for sterilization and disinfection, it is possible to effectively suppress and eliminate mold, bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. At the same time, continuous UV exposure helps prevent coil corrosion, oxidation, and premature aging, thereby contributing to energy savings and emissions reduction.

Say goodbye to germs and viruses — Lightbest brings health and protection to your life!
