In recent years, the Internet of Things, Big data, cloud computing and other information technologies and intelligent agricultural equipment have been widely used in the field of agricultural production. Smart agriculture has become an important starting point for high-quality agricultural development. At the same time, biological lighting, as an important hardware carrier for the implementation of smart agricultural technology, has also faced unprecedented development opportunities and industrial transformation challenges.

How can the biological lighting industry achieve transformation and upgrading in the development of smart agriculture and empower high-quality development of smart agriculture? Recently, China Mechanised agriculture Association, together with China Agricultural University and Guangzhou Guangya Frankfurt Co., Ltd., co hosted the 2023 International Forum on Biooptics and Smart Agriculture Industry. Experts, scholars and enterprise representatives from home and abroad gathered to share around the theme of “smart agriculture development”, “Plant factory and smart greenhouse”, “bio optical technology”, “smart agriculture application”, etc Exchange ideas and experiences on the development of smart agriculture in various regions, and jointly explore the integration of smart agriculture and bio optics.

Smart agriculture, as one of the new modern agricultural production methods, is a key link in promoting high-quality agricultural development and achieving rural revitalization in China. “Smart agricultural technology, through the deep integration and integrated innovation of intelligent equipment technology, information technology and agriculture, is very beneficial to improving the production potential of crops, especially in adapting to global climate change, Soil conservation, water quality protection, reducing pesticide use, and maintaining agricultural ecological diversity.” Academician of the CAE Member Zhao Chunjiang, chief scientist of the National Agricultural Information Technology Research Center and the National Agricultural Intelligent Equipment Engineering Research Center, said at the forum.

In recent years, China has continuously explored the research and industrialization of smart agricultural technology, which has been widely applied in fields such as breeding, planting, aquaculture, and agricultural machinery equipment. At the forum, Professor Wang Xiqing from the School of Biology, China Agricultural University shared the application and achievements of smart agricultural technology in breeding, taking maize breeding as an example. Professor Li Baoming from the School of Water Conservancy and Civil Engineering of China Agricultural University stressed in his special report on the theme of “intelligent technology enables high-quality development of facility aquaculture industry” that China’s facility aquaculture industry farms have an urgent need for intelligence.

In the development process of smart agriculture, bio lighting, as an important hardware carrier for the implementation of smart agricultural technology, can not only be applied to equipment such as Grow light or greenhouse fill lights, but also can continuously expand new innovative applications in remote planting, smart breeding and other fields. Professor Zhou Zhi from the School of Chemistry and Materials Science of Hunan Agricultural University introduced the research progress of bioluminescence technology in influencing plant growth, taking tea plant growth and tea processing as examples. The research shows that light and light-emitting devices (lamps) can be used in the growth environment of plants represented by tea plants, which is an important means of environmental factor regulation.

In terms of the integration of bio lighting technology and smart agriculture, technology research and development and industrialization in the field of Plant factory and smart greenhouse are a key link. Plant factory and intelligent greenhouse mainly use artificial light source and solar radiation as plant photosynthetic energy, and use facility environmental control technology to provide suitable environmental conditions for plants.

In the exploration of Plant factory and intelligent greenhouse in China, Professor Li Lingzhi from the School of Horticulture, Shanxi Agricultural University shared the research practice related to tomato planting. The People’s Government of Yanggao County in Datong City and Shanxi Agricultural University jointly established the Tomato Industry Research Institute of Shanxi Agricultural University to explore the whole process digital management of facility vegetables, especially tomatoes. “Practice has shown that although Yanggao County has sufficient light in winter, it also needs to adjust the light quality through fill lights to achieve fruit tree production and quality improvement. To this end, we cooperate with plant light enterprises to establish a spectrum laboratory to develop lights that can be used in production and help people increase income.” Li Lingzhi said.

He Dongxian, a professor in the School of Water Conservancy and Civil Engineering of China Agricultural University and a post scientist in the national technical system of Chinese herbal medicine industry, believes that for Chinese bio lighting enterprises, they still face considerable challenges in embracing the wind of smart agriculture. She said that in the future, enterprises need to improve the input-output ratio of smart agriculture and gradually realize the high yield and efficiency of Plant factory. At the same time, the industry also needs to further promote the cross-border integration of technology and agriculture under government guidance and market drive, integrate resources in advantageous fields, and promote the industrialization, standardization, and intelligent development of agriculture.

It is worth mentioning that in order to strengthen technology research and integration in the field of smart agriculture, the inaugural meeting of the Smart Agriculture Development Branch of China Mechanised agriculture Association was held at the same time during this forum. According to the relevant person in charge of China Mechanised agriculture Association, the branch will integrate resources in advantageous fields through cross-border integration of photoelectric, energy, artificial intelligence and other technical fields with the agricultural field. In the future, the branch hopes to further promote the development of agricultural industrialization, agricultural standardization, and agricultural intelligence in China, and play a positive role in promoting the comprehensive technology level of smart agriculture in China.
